The Holler: Post-Thanksgiving Freakout

11/29/14

One more time for 2014.  We played a lot of shows, and are taking some time off to work on new material.  Slow crowd at first, but they packed the place eventually.

The Holler: Get Down With DIGS

11/14/14
DeSoto Theatre

John Schroeder is on the board of this organization.  They help adults with developmental disabilities.  We've played his place a couple times, and packed it out.  We opened the show.  IMO, one of our finest performances.

Kira Annalise and Willie Heath Neal play at our bar a lot, as well as Dixie.  They've been booking some bands there, and put this together as a kind of audition for a weekend gig.  The owner loved us, and wants us back.  Yeah!

Part of our prize from the Rome Battle Of The Bands was getting this gig.  We only got a half hour, and there was so much going on, it's hard to tell if people were paying attention.  Feedback from friends was that some people thought we were good.

The Holler: Mullins Appreciation Night

9/28/14
400 Block Bar
Rome, GA

The guys from My Ninja put this one together.  No question, Mullins is the main man when it comes to championing the scene here.  It had to be a Sunday night, as few people have gigs that night.  There was free pizza, a good bar crowd, and a whole bunch of music.  My Ninja opened, John Lee Hookers blew it up for a few, Drop Dead Nasty brought a killer surf/punk vibe.  We were invited to play, but there was only one guitar.  We made it work, and played a few.

The Holler & Browngrass On The Big Stage

9/19/14
Brewhouse Music & Grill
Rome, GA

Another testament to how fast this ride is going.  We didn't call them, they called us.  We've had this booked for nearly three months.  Crazy.  Slim crowd, as folks were taking off for Music Midtown, and saving their strength for Beer Fest (the next day).  But it was, as Mullins says, quality over quantity.  We reconnected with Chris Brown and did a solid Browngrass set (which the world will never hear, since I forgot to push the Record button).  We got a real soundcheck, had monitors and lights, and a big ol' stage.  Oh, and we ended up with two band tabs, since we were technically two bands.  Lordy.

The Holler: Tennessee Tour

It all started with the booking of the Knoxville gig.  We'd have to leave by 6 a.m. or so to get there.  No small feat, but not impossible.  The Sugarlands gig brought it all together.  We traveled in leisurely fashion, getting there early, checking in, relaxing.  They got us a room at the Gatlinburg Inn (est. 1937), and a deep discount on a second one (there were six of us on this trip, including Ben and Callie).  We bought some beer, settled in, set up, soundchecked, and had a spaghetti dinner (courtesy of Sugarlands).  They also gave us each a jar of moonshine.  The tasting tour was fantastic.  It rained around starting time, so the pedestrian traffic dried up.  A few small bursts of a crowd, but nothing great.  It was a little hard to get up for it, especially since we'd had great crowds at home.  A fun time, nonetheless.  We found a laid-back bar down the street, had some beers, returned to the hotel for a late-night swim and pizza.  Oh, and we repeated some songs.  I'm not a fan, but it's part of the crowd dynamic.  People wander in and out, so there's always a new crowd (what there was of it).  We also don't have enough songs to carry a whole night.  We're working on it.

We left at 8:30 a.m.  Again, no small feat, but necessary.  They wanted us in Knoxville at 10.  We were early, and set it up quickly.  It was a stripped-down affair, with Josh on acoustic, Adam using Lightning Rods, and me plugged into a DI.  Peewee showed up at the last minute, just as Red told us to take the stage.  He did his thing (solo acoustic), and we were on.  Not our usual element (daytime, and a crowd of mostly senior citizens), but a grand time.  Red Hickey was a great hostess, and helped us through the intricacies of a live broadcast.  We packed out, parked the cars, wandered around town, drooled over vintage instruments, ate Mexican food, found coffee, and headed home.  Fun, fun, fun.  We'll have to do it again.

The Holler: Back To The Courtyard

8/29/14
Schroeder's New Deli
Rome, GA

There really is no better place to play than Schroeder's.  The weather is always a factor.  It rains so damn much in this town.  Bands have cancelled because of the threat of rain, and then it doesn't rain.  Weird.  We've been busting our asses so hard for the two competitions, it was nice to get back to playing a real show with our friends at a cool place.  Oh, and it was so humid, it was like playing in the rain.

The Holler: State Mutual Insurance Battle of the Bands

8/9/14
DeSoto Theatre
Rome, GA

Let me make this clear:  I absolutely hate this kind of thing.  I am not a competitive person.  I do enjoy sports on TV, and do my best whenever engaging in such, but it matters not to me who wins or loses.  That being said, I have a great band, and I knew we had an excellent chance to win, if not pull a whole lot of exposure.  Eight bands were selected.  Their music was played on The Ridge, we all appeared on the radio, fans voted for the Final Four by donating to Cancer Navigators.  The four who raised the most money went to the Performance Round at the DeSoto (which was enough for me and my guys).  There were two awards:  People's Choice (whoever raised the most money) and Judges' Choice (three judges using the following criteria:  Musicianship, Audience Engagement, Presentation, Originality, Overall Experience).  I knew that Kamikaze Dali, People's Choice last year, wanted the Judges' Choice more than anything, and that they would bring it.  Not ruling the other two bands out, we put together our best stuff.  It was a long, fun day.  Most of the musicians hung out with each other backstage, laughing it all away.  It was not at all a competition, just camaraderie.  Everybody played great.  Last year's judges were a little more critical in their comments.  This year's had only nice things to say.  After the first round, we and the Dali were picked to play again.  They won the coin toss, opted to go second (as we would have done).  We knew we were in a competition, but we genuinely have more fun than should be allowed when we play, and it showed.  "I'm Gone" was the bombastic closer it has been in our live shows, and it put us over the top, according to one judge.  I'm not a competitor, but you don't want to compete with me.  They had to follow that, and I knew it wouldn't be easy.  They are a great band, but I knew we had it.  They brought all the musicians onstage afterwards, everyone got a participation trophy, the Dali won the People's Choice (they ran away with it), we won the Judges' Choice.  We were gracious winners, high-fiving and hugging all around.  I got interviewed for the radio.

Manning got us hooked up with this one.  Details were sketchy all the way, but it sounded legit.  They offered to pay, so that says something.  Lee Shealy ran sound, and it all went great.  We added some new originals (including "Wasn't Really"), poured beers into red cups, and did our thing.

The Holler EP Release Show & Stereotrash Records Showcase

6/6/14
Schroeder's New Deli
Rome, GA

Seemed like this gig was never gonna get here.  We worked hard on recording and getting the mixes ready to go.  In fine Rome fashion, packaging waited 'til the morning of the show.  Weather was an issue all day, and the folks in charge of First Friday moved their event inside.  After consulting all weather outlets, we decided to do it.  An odd sprinkle of drops here and there while setting up, but well in the clear by showtime.  And what a show.  I've never seen the courtyard as packed as it was this night.  Arlo, The Donors, Muletide, and The Holler have all recorded for Manning's label (which was easy for us, an Manning is in our band).  We will return to the studio later this year for a full-length release.  All the bands brought their best, and people whooped it up all night.  We have work to do, more shows coming up, more songs to learn.  Holler!

The Debut Of The Holler!

5/31/14
Red
Rome, GA

After four months of rehearsal, we finally got to play in front of people.  Josh, Adam, and I played for a few weeks at the start, knowing we were going to need another person.  Manning came in and made it his.  We all kicked around ideas, made suggestions on arrangements, leaving any ego at home.  I wasn't sure I wanted to be in a band, but these guys convinced me otherwise.  I damn sure want to be in this band.  We booked this gig first, then another one the first weekend of May.  That one got cancelled because of the Block Party.  More time to prep, I say.  The amazing Thunderbolt Patterson signed on to open the show.  They should be headlining the Ryman and places like that.

All kinds of twitterpated tonight.  Walked out of the house without my recorder, as well as one guitar cable, so I couldn't tune on the fly like I do.  Small crowd tonight, although most of them were friendlies.  Beth sang a few, and Arizona sang a couple of his to start the 3rd set.  He and Beth did one together, and I wrapped it up.  Nothing otherworldly or transcendental about tonight, but it was a good time.  Maybe she'll come out one of these nights, and it'll be cool.

Wild Wednesday

5/7/14

Some sort of Berry student bar crawl happened tonight.  The bar filled up at nine, so I got on it.  Most of 'em weren't really into what I was doing, but some familiar faces showed up, and by the end of the night it didn't matter what I was doing.  I'd rather have a few who were paying attention rather than a roomful who weren't, but it was fun nonetheless.

Ridin' The Wayside (Again)

4/4/14
Bella's Pizzeria
Smyrna, GA

Preston put together a surprise party for Aileen's birthday.  They've missed Lefty's Monday night jams, so we did it on a Friday.  He asked me if I'd be down for a mini Wayside reunion for the occasion.  I agreed, we practiced once at the bunker.  The surprise went off without a hitch.  Her sister came down from wherever, also a surprise.  She didn't put it together that we were playing until we all got on stage to do it, even though we were all in the room.  Good times.  Lefty was only going to play a couple songs with us, but decided to do it all.  Frank Menendez was a Monday night regular, and added a good thing to it.

Had to wait for some tables to clear before I started, so a little shorter show tonight.  Beth wanted to do "Almost Lover" even though we really haven't practiced it.  She knows it well enough, and I can follow along as long as I have a chart (which I do).  Good stuff.

Fillin' In Again

3/5/14
400 Block Bar
Rome, GA

David Bell wasn't feeling up to par at our recording sessions two days earlier, he asked if I would be able to cover if he still felt bad today.  Hence, here I am.  I had to wait an extra 30 minutes to start, as people were still in the dining room.  The crowd started off pretty slow, so the originals came out.  Friendly faces showed up, so I played the ones I knew they'd like.  Lillian has sat in on "Jolene" a couple times now.  I don't know how I'm gonna balance all the projects I want to take on.

Andy On The Moon

2/19/14
Moon Roof Bar
Rome, GA

Bryan Mullins has picked up the alternating Wednesdays with David Bell, like I have done at 400.  He also has an already scheduled gig at the Roof this Saturday, so I filled in for him tonight.   I lost two gigs because of the snow, and am rusty, and am playing next week, so it was good to get back in there.  Besides, the weather was not at all what it's been the last few weeks.  Flaps were up, heaters were off.  The kind of night where you want to be on the Roof.
Lots of friendly faces, a good time was had by all.  I decided not to record, so there is no setlist.

Wednesdays Begin!

1/15/14
400 Block Bar
Rome, GA

My first official Wednesday gig at 400.  Up 'til now, I've been filling in for David Bell.  He made his solo return to the Moon Roof tonight, though he was feeling ill, and cut it short.
It's a late-night kind of place, the last stop on the Broad St. Crawl.  I'm starting at 9:30, just to have something going between the end of dinner service and the bar crowd.  Unfortunately, the cold has people reluctant to crawl all over, so we had a small crowd.  It looked like it was going to pick up, then it didn't.  I was playing what was to be the last song, and a few people popped in.  I played a few more for them.  I wasn't feeling too good myself.
There is a problem between my recorder and the external battery.  Most of my recordings of these gigs are only so I can keep a setlist (being the good little Deadhead that I am).  Tonight, it just wasn't working, so there is no setlist.  I have about 200 cover songs, most of which are in regular rotation.  Looking to play enough gigs so that they'll all get to run around in the yard.  Stay tuned!

Barring any unforeseen complications, Dave will be back on the solo horse next week.  One last double-bill/rehab assignment.  Thanks, everybody.  I'll be alternating Wednesdays at 400 from here on out, starting next week.
