Travelin' Riverside Pre-Hangover Extravaganza, pt. 16

12/18/13
Moon Roof Bar
Rome, GA

Looks like David will be on his own after the New Year.  The ol' hip is getting to a place where he feels good about it.  Damn, it's been a good run.  Looking forward to establishing my own thing at 400.
Pretty small crowd tonight.  Some familiar faces, but I think we're in that window between local college folks going home, and Romans who go to school elsewhere coming home.  Oh well.  We give it all we got every time.
Tried to record to keep a setlist, but the cable that connects the battery to the recorder is squirelly.

Continuing Dave's comeback, alternating sets.  Dave kicked it off with an original set.  I followed his lead.  "Wasn't Really" makes its return in a new form.  The old one sounded too much like something else.

11/20/13

David Bell talked to me about splitting the bill this night.  He's been able to play with Thunderbolt, because Tim is there to help him with the gear, but doing it all by himself is difficult.  We are there to support this guy because we believe in what he does.  I brought all the gear and we went for it.  Good crowd, anticipating David's return.  I played a set, then Dave played a set.

Beth came in, and we did our tunes.  Still working on some more, soon come.  A birthday girl crowd came in.  It was Becca's 21st, and they were on a mission (which included body shots).  I thought for sure they were going to fall into my gear, but some less wasted members of their party made sure it didn't happen.  We all sang "Happy Birthday" and Russell tagged it.  It's not often that you get a request for original music, but you play it when you do.

Dave and I have spoken several times about people asking to sit in.  Good players will never ask, but will wait to be invited (and they usually are).  I have a hard time saying yes to someone I don't know.  You never know what to expect.  I actually got burned last year (which prompted the conversation with Dave).  That being said, Dave hasn't been able to perform solo since his hip surgery.  Loading all that gear is tough enough when you're healthy.  I invited Dave to play a few, and it was a blast.  People had been filing into the bar, so we had a good crowd.  I had a big ol' cheesy smile on the whole time, and I know he (and everyone else) enjoyed it.  After a short intermission, I picked it back up.

***Keri requested this one, and she, Jay, and I howled along.  It was so slow that they shut down the bar right after this set was over.  And, unlike many a place I've played across the Southeast, they paid me even though they lost money doing so.  Thanks to Anthony Barba for being a straight-shooter.

Second Service At The Vault

10/27/13
Second Service @ The Vault
La Marie's Parking Lot
Rome, GA

After a little uncertainty as to who was going to play and all that, we got it together.  I really had to work to get the sound right for The Strange (3 acoustic guitars, 1 upright bass, 3 vocals -- filled almost every channel of the PA!), so they went first.  Someone broke a string a few songs in, so Clifford Brooks read a few.  They picked it back up.  Jennifer Avery read a few.  I played a set:

I

Prologue

Kevin Myrick read some fiction.   The Strange played another set.  Clifford read some more.  I played another set:

"Isles" and "Summer" don't get played much.  Most of my songs really need more musicians (they were written that way), and those two really need it.  Daylight was fading fast.  Kevin read another one.  There's just enough light from the Hawthorne parking lot to make it work.  La Marie's has another Sunday event, so we will alternate weekends starting week after next.  Stay tuned!

Second Service At The Vault

10/20/13
La Marie's Parking Lot
Rome, GA

Sundays At Cotton Block turned into Second Service At The Vault because the city of Rome decided it was against their policy to have it in the park.  I'm sure we didn't violate any policy.  We cleaned up after ourselves, and it didn't get rowdy.  Whatever.  The folks from La Marie's reached out to us, offering up their parking lot.  Now, instead of being in the park, away from downtown (but only a little bit), we are in downtown, right off the street.  They set up an outdoor bar/hookah lounge and made a little cash (but didn't charge anyone to be there, so it's cool).  I played a set:

Prologue
Fantastic (Existential Crisis?  What Existential Crisis?) >
Harbinger >
Saturday
Not Yet But Maybe
Midnight Afternoon

Clifford Brooks read from his book, The Draw of Broken Eyes and Whirling Metaphysics (which is awesome).

Muletide Perkins Trio played a set of that good ol' Georgia slop-rock.

Jennifer Avery read some poems.

I played another set:

Cliff read some more, including one he'd written on the spot, which referenced all of us.  Neato.

MPT played another set.

I recorded all of it, and will release what I can.  Thanks to everyone who made it happen.  Oh, and we had hula hoopers the whole time as well.  Too much fun, fer sure.

This is, in all likelihood (have I said that before?), the last time covering for David Bell.  It's been fantastic, I've learned a lot, and have gotten better at what I do.  That being said, Anthony Barba offered me a regular Wednesday gig, alternating with David once he comes back in a couple weeks.  How about that?  David also showed up tonight for the first set.

Name-dropped

10/11/13
400 Block Bar

Closed the Roof early tonight, only because it died after the music was done.  Sikes and I bopped on up the street to catch the last bit of Jerry On The Moon.  All our friends were there, we hugged and high-fived like we do.  Jedd Lovel shouted me out (because I do the song as well), and they ripped into "We Can Work It Out" (hybrid arrangement of Stevie Wonder and The Beatles).   Thanks, y'all.  One of these days I'll have enough bread to hire you as my band.

One more time covering for David Bell.  Not sure how many more there will be on the regular, as he is close to returning.  I already had to bail on a potential Thunderbutt gig because there aren't enough of us to work all the shifts when everybody has something else to do.  Oh well.  I'll keep doin' 'em as they come along.  Lots of friendly, familiar faces tonight.  Busted out a few that haven't been done in front of people (or very much).  The Daft Punk song has potential, and the Seger song was just to see if it would work (it might).

Sundays At Cotton Block

10/6/13
Bridgepoint Plaza
Rome, GA

A continuation of last year's thing, a little later this time.  My one concern was that the First Friday canopy would be gone (and it was), and we'd have to arrange for cover (which we did).
I played a set:
Prologue
Fantastic (Existential Crisis?  What Existential Crisis?)
Harbinger >
Saturday >
Not Yet But Maybe
Tomorrow Is A Long Time >
The Boy With The Thorn In His Side

Kevin Myrick read a great short story:  "Dawson wants his money.  Dawson's comin' for you."  Awesome.

Kylie Devaron played a set.  We had to re-arrange things as the weather got weird.  Not enough rain to wash it out, but people stood under the trees.  Jennifer Avery read some poetry.

I played a little more:
River Trip >
Too Fast For You
Midnight Afternoon (aborted as the weather was getting nasty and we had to go)

Clifford Brooks read a couple of things while we tore it down.

John McGinnis (who organized this year's festivities) invited us back to his place for birthday/after party.  I set up a little bit of PA and took off for a while.  Came back with beer, Cliff read some from his book (awesome) and Kylie did some more music.  Just kind of the vibe I like.

Thanks to the brave few who paid no heed to the weather.  We'll keep it going for a few more weeks.  Stay tuned to https://www.facebook.com/sundaycottonblock for all the details.

Thunderbutt Peterson, Episode III

Thunderbutt Peterson
9/28/13
Old Havana Cigar Co.
Rome, GA

This was, in all likelihood, Thunderbutt's final performance.  I think if we are able to put it together again, we'll have a different name, just to distinguish it and let it run around on its own.  It's been a huge pleasure and honor to fill in for David Bell, especially on these gigs with Tim.  You find out just what kind of musician you are when you play with him, and it's easy to play your best.
That being said, what a fun night it was.  I brought out the big mics, and recorded the whole thing.  The PA sounded like the big rock show.  The Bulldogs prevailed over LSU (Geaux Dawgs, indeed!), which always makes for a fun night.  David Bell himself made an appearance after weeks at home, leaving only for PT.  'Twas a super thrill to have him there.  Thanks to all who came out.

Another "Eclectic Strings" wedding gig.  This one much simpler than last week's affair.  We played some wedding classics, and had arranged Alan Jackson's "That's The Way" for their unity candle ceremony (which, due to a schedule mix-up, was skipped by the replacement pastor).  We played it after the recessional, and they did the ceremony after that, complete with pictures.

2 Gigs In One Day!

9/14/13a
Valentine-Edson Wedding
Canoe Restaurant
Atlanta, GA

Atlanta bride (Valentine) and California groom (Edson) met and live in Singapore.  Bride's father was in the music store where my father works, buying sheet music for the wedding.  Casually mentioned to my father that all they needed now was musicians, which is where we come in.  Thanks Dad!  Joe, Sam, and I have done a few weddings -- some classics and custom arrangements of popular songs that bride and groom especially want to hear.  Not the same ol' wedding music, y'all.  After about 50 e-mails, phone calls, and Skype conversations from Singapore, we got it together.
Joe and Sam started with some ragtime duets, I joined in on an Italian piece ("Romantic") and "I Married An Angel" (Rodgers & Hart); they played "Misty", we did "Come What May" (from "Moulin Rouge") for the bride.  Never settle when it comes to your wedding music, y'all.  That's how we get down.  We played "Be Thou My Vision" and "Amazing Grace" during the ceremony.  They had Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros' "Home" on an iPod for their recessional.  We shifted around for a cocktail hour-type reception (thanks for the Mimosas!) and played "Morning Has Broken", "Here, There, And Everywhere", "Crazy Love", "Crash Into Me", "I Will", "In My Life", "If I Were A Carpenter", "All You Need Is Love", and reprised "Come What May" since we didn't get to play all of it during the processional.  We'd worked up "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out*" in case their recessional music didn't work out, so we played it too.

9/11/13

Continuing to bust out songs I've never done in front of people, wondering just how many songs I might eventually be able to do from memory, seeing what works and what doesn't work as well in a solo setting (anybody wanna be my lead guitarist?).  Always a smaller crowd for the first set, so the originals come out.  I even played a new one.  Beth came out, screwed her courage up, and we did our songs as well.  As someone said when we were done, "Beth is the shit!"  And,  indeed, she is.  Thanks to everyone who continues to come out.  Keep a good thought for David Bell.

Thunderbutt Peterson, Episode I

8/24/13
Old Havana Cigar Co.
Rome, GA

We kicked around a bunch of variations on the Thunderbolt Patterson name.  This one is close enough that you might not notice the difference if you saw it written outside the venue.  That being said, you find out just what kind of musician you are when you play with Tim Bowen.  The man is a guru, y'all.  We got together a couple times to make a list and sketch out some arrangements.  Most of these are Thunderbolt songs that I knew I could learn, but I added a few of my own.

4/5 The Strange

8/16/13
Schroeder's New Deli Courtyard
Rome, GA

The Strange booked a semi-acoustic gig (their drummer had to go to the Bahamas or something, ain't that a bitch).  They asked a few of us to play in an open-mic format.  JonRoss Maddox and Justin Brown each did a set, then I did a set:

Prologue >
Harbinger >
Not Yet But Maybe >
Saturday
River Trip >
Too Fast For You
Anything At All
Epilogue
Midnight Afternoon

The Strange brought the strangeness in a great stripped-down format.  Always fun to play original music in front of people.  The cat and my bedroom walls get bored with it.
